Dr Fan had started the Mouth Cancer Awareness week Singapore in conjunction with the same public health campaign in the UK since 2006 . The aim was to promote early detection of oral cancer in the hope of reducing mortality and morbidity that patient suffers in advanced stage of cancer. This was the first of its kind in Singapore.
The week long programme included public lectures for patients and family members. Dentists and oral surgeons were given updates on oral cancer and its management. A free public oral cancer screening clinic using the latest screening tool was conducted in the NUHS Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. A public forum with all the different healthcare disciplines informing patients on the integrated care for oral cancer management. These events were covered by the media such as 938 live yearly. Newspaper articles in both chinese and english media were published to inform patients of the programmes. TV media such as Good Morning Singapore had covered the event as well.
Everyone with an interest in oral cancer is encouraged to join in the programme which is normally held in November. The campaign has achieved some of its aims as a few patients had benefitted from early discovery of their mouth cancers.
