Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is a surgical discipline that treats conditions of the mouth, jaws, face and neck. In the developed nations including UK and most of Europe, all oral and maxillofacial surgeons are doubly qualified in both medicine and dentistry, ie qualifications BDS AND MBBS/MBChB. About 50% of American oral and maxillofacial surgeons have gone through medical training though many are singly qualified in office based oral surgery practice performing wisdom teeth removal and dental implantology. In Australia it was recently mandatory for trainees to acquire medical qualification just like in the UK. These surgeons will then be able to perform the full range of complex surgery such as surgical management of oral cancer, microvascular reconstructive surgery and major craniofacial surgery. Traditionally in Singapore, oral surgeons are mostly dentally qualified performing surgery for dental diseases. There is however a push now for training of the next generation of surgeons to be qualified to perform the full range of surgery and preferably acquire medical qualification for in-patient care of patients undergoing major oral and maxillofacial surgery which needed hospitalization as the singly qualified (ie only dentally qualified) may not be able to adequately look after patients who are medically compromised. In the UK, singly qualified oral surgeons are not allowed to admit patients on their own.
