After his medical housemanship, he went on to pursue his basic surgical training in General Surgery, ENT Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma/Orthopaedic Surgery and Urology and passed the FRCS (Clinical Surgery in General) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was and still is (in 2017) the only Singaporean who had competitively gained entry into the UK Higher Surgical Training Programme in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and passed the prestigious intercollegiate exam leading to the diploma of FRCS (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and obtaining the CCST (Certificate of Completion in Specialist Training) with full registration in the UK Medical Specialist Register as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.
He came back to Singapore and was appointed as a Senior Consultant Surgeon in the National University Hospital and Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, National University of Singapore. He is the only Singaporean oral and maxillofacial surgeon who is fully accredited in the United Kingdom and practicing the full scope of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
He was involved in many appointments in the Ministry of Health and professional bodies dealing with training of the younger generation of surgeons. He was the director of the first B.Toxin course for dental surgeons and had been instrumental in developing the oral cancer service in National University Hospital where he used to teach.
