Major Bone Grafting

Major Bone Grafting

Bone grafting with “artificial bone”

In most cases where there is insufficient bone for implant surgery, the use of artificially prepared bone or artificial grafts may be enough to allow for sufficient bone replacement. After grafting, the patient will have to wait for a period of time (about 2 to 4 months) for bone to reform in those grafted areas before the dental implant procedure can be carried out.

Major Bone Grafting

Prolonged wearing of dentures can result in the atrophy or loss of bone to such a point like in the diagram that there is only a knife edged piece of bone and this will be impossible to have dental implants inserted without first “adding” some bone back to the area. This process is called bone augmentation or bone grafting.
Small deficiencies can be easily grafted with “artificial bone grafts” but big deficiencies may require grafts taken from hip. This is not necessarily a big operation as in most cases, a small one centimetre hole is all that is required to harvest enough marrow graft and even small block grafts for augmentation The graft is screwed in place with marrow graft placed around it and left in place for at least 4-6 months. At 6 months, the graft is fully integrated into the ridge which was then ready for implant placements.
